Composer: Francesco Cilea – Librettist: Arturo Colautti – First performance: Milan, Teatro alla Scala, 6 November 1902

Based on the play by E. Scribe and E. Legouvé, Francesco Cilea’s most popular opera, Adriana Lecouvreur, tells the fictional story of one of the greatest actresses of the 18th century who, according to the legend, was poisoned by a rival in love with a bunch of violets.

A dramatic and effective plot and Cilea’s refined scoring are the strong points of Adriana, with a metatheatrical monologue in the third act (Fedra’s monologue) and that – from the musical point of view – is extremely attentive to singing.

Adriana Lecouvreur was one of the favourite operas of some the leading sopranos of the 20th century as Claudia Muzio, Renata Tebaldi, Magda Olivero and Montserrat Caballé. Their admiration for this opera is one of the reasons why it has been performed often to the present day.
