Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Librettist: Caterino Mazzolà, after Pietro Metastasio

First performance: Prague, Estates Theatre (Stavovské divadlo), 6 September 1791

La clemenza di Tito is Mozart’s second-last opera, performed for the first time only few month before his untimely death. He composed La clemenza di Tito for the coronation as King of Bohemia of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II, a circumstance that influenced both the plot of the opera and its edifying ending. The story is based on complicated romantic relationships and Vitellia’s conspiracy against Emperor Tito. Though things seem to take a turn for the worse for the conspirators, in the end the Emperor forgives them all, declaring that he wants to be remembered as a merciful sovereign and not as a cruel and revengeful one.
