Wolfgang Amadeus MozartWolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Salzburg, 27 January 1756 – Vienna, 5 December 1791), Austrian composer. He is the most influential and versatile composer in the history of music, so that he is usually called a “universal composer”.

Born into a musical family (his father, Leopold, was a composer, violinist and the author of the celebrated textbook Violischule), Mozart revealed a prodigious gift for music since an early age. With his father and his talented elder sister Anna Maria (“Nannerl”), Mozart travelled throughout Europe performing in the major cities and Courts, showing off his talent as a child prodigy.

Although he served in Salzburg with his father for several years, Mozart was unsatisfied with his position and in 1782 he moved to Vienna, not without disagreements with the authorities and his family. From this moment onwards, Mozart’s career as a composer flourished. His greatest masterpieces are all written in the last ten years of his life and include works of every kind, beginning with opera (the three Da Ponte operas as well as Die Zauberflöte). Mozart also wrote a conspicuous number of instrumental works to provide material for his career as a freelance pianist, as well as symphonies, concertos and a huge variety of chamber and choral music. His final work, the Requiem, is almost a legend with its lugubrious (though for the most part fictional) series of ill omens.

Mozart’s mature style, which found its perfect synthesis in the Viennese years, shows a variety of influences. Characterized by elegant proportions and incomparable harmony, it is now regarded as the best realization of the so-called Classical Period.
