LIFE

Giacomo PucciniGiacomo Puccini (Lucca, 22 December 1858 – Bruxelles, 29 November 1924) Italian composer. He is actually considered the greatest composer of Italian opera after Verdi.

Born into a family that had assiduously cultivated the musical profession (for four generations before Giacomo), Puccini studied at the Istituto Musicale Pacini in Lucca, where his uncle taught, and was introduced to the study of orchestral music by Carlo Angeloni. Verdi’s music played a major role in his education.

Puccini’s first success as a composer was with the motet Plaudite populi, dating to 1877, and with a Credo (later inserted into the Messa a quattro), which were performed in 1878 in honour of San Paolino, the patron saint of Lucca.

In 1870, Puccini went to study to the conservatory in Milan, the city where he met Alfredo Catalani and the Scapigliati, a group including Arrigo Boito. His first opera, Le villi, premiered thanks to the subscription supported by Boito and other Scapigliati. The opera, produced at the Teatro Dal Verme, was a success.

Puccini’s early works are still connected with the late-19th-century romantic Italian style, but in his next operas he developed the Verismo style, a “realistic” way to compose music, of which he became one of the major representatives. Among Puccini’s most popular works, we must include Manon Lescaut (1893), La bohème (1896), Tosca (1900), Madama Butterfly (1904), and his last masterpiece, Turandot (1924), which remained unfinished at his death and was completed by Franco Alfano.
