Gioacchino RossiniGioacchino (or Gioachino) Rossini (Pesaro, 29 February 1792 – Passy, 13 November 1868) Italian operatic composer.

Rossini was the most influential Italian composer in the first half of the 19th century. His innovative style, which he developed since an early age, was inspired by the German composers, in particular Mozart, to the point that in his youth Rossini was nicknamed “il Tedeschino” (“the little German”). With his thirty-nine operas, Rossini cast into oblivion predecessors of the calibre of Paisiello, whose Il barbiere di Siviglia is now forgotten in favour of Rossini’s opera with the same title. Moreover, Rossini exerted his influence on the new generation of composers and both Bellini and Donizetti, who share with him the definition of “bel canto composers”, actually took him as their own model.

Rossini is best remembered for his operas. His greatest successes are L’Italiana in Algeri, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola, Otello, Semiramide and the final masterpiece, Guillaume Tell. However, Rossini wrote also sacred music, as well as many piano and chamber works.

These last works belong for the most part to the years of his “silence”. Rossini quitted the operatic world in 1829, but actually he never gave up composing and in his retirement years he wrote works as the Petite Messe Solennelle and the Stabat Mater (premiered in his final version under Donizetti’s conduction). In these years, Rossini was also a point of reference for young composers and singers, who often asked for his help and advice, as his dense correspondence reveals.

Only after the advent of Verdi Rossini lost his prominent place in the operatic life but, rather than feeling hurt, he praised the work of his younger colleague and considered him the only Italian composer who was still able to compose an opera in the 1850s-1860s.
