Opéra BastilleABOUT THE OPERA

Composer: Gaetano Donizetti – Librettist: Felice Romani

First performance: Milan, Teatro della Canobbiana, 12 May 1832

L’elisir d’amore (“The Elixir of Love”) is one of Gaetano Donizetti’s most popular and amusing operas. Based on Eugène Scribe’s Le philtre and composed in just fourteen days, the Elisir marked a running point in the 19th century vision of the comic opera. Its character are psychologically deeper than those of Rossini’s operas and, differently from the stereotypes of Neapolitan opera, they are much more complex and reveal their bourgeois morals. With its delightful rural setting, amusing expedients and wonderful music (including one of the most famous tenor arias, Una furtiva lagrima), L’elisir d’amore tells the story of Nemorino, a naive rustic, desperately in love with Adina, a rich and capricious landowner. Despite the girl pretends not to be interested in him and despite the meddling of sergeant Belcore who is about to marry Adina, the story has a happy ending thanks to the miraculous “elixir” (nothing but red wine) of “doctor” Dulcamara.
