Metropolitan Opera House LeftABOUT THE OPERA

Composer: Giacomo Puccini – Librettists: Giuseppe Adami (Il Tabarro), Giovannino Forzano (Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi)

First performance: Metropolitan Opera House, New York, 14 December 1918

The title Il Trittico (“The Triptych”) brings together three operas in one act by Giacomo Puccini: Il Tabarro, written in 1910 and originally intended as an independent opera, Suor Angelica (1916-1917) and Gianni Schicchi (1918). The last two were added later to the original project. The three operas have nothing in common and, while the first two works have tragic endings, Gianni Schicchi is a comic opera in every respect. At the premiere, only this one was unanimously praised, while the other two raised perplexities.
