Composer: Gaetano Donizetti – Librettist: J. H. Vernoy de Saint-Georges and J. F. Alfred Bayard

First performance: Paris, Opéra Comique, 11 February 1840

La fille du regiment is an opera in two acts about the vicissitudes of a young girl who grew up in a regiment and then returned to her family of origin. Despite the initial criticism, the Fille became one of Donizetti’s most successful operas. It is remarkable not only for the famous 9 Cs aria sung by the tenor in the first act, but also for the beautiful arias performed by the protagonist, Marie, Il faut partir at the end of that same act and Par le rang et l’opulence in the second. La fille du regiment reveals how deeply Donizetti understood the refined entertainment of the opera-comique without leaving aside the Italian vocal style.
