Opéra BastilleABOUT THE OPERA

Composer: Giuseppe Verdi – Librettist: Francesco Maria Piave

First performance: St Petersburg, Imperial Theatre, 10 November 1862 (first version); Milan, Teatro alla Scala, 27 February 1869 (revised version)

Despite its ludicrous plot, the tenor and soprano arias from La forza del destino are among the most beautiful ever written by composer Giuseppe Verdi: O tu che in seno agli angeli and Pace, mio Dio are some of his best achievements and are sung by some of the most important singers. Set in Seville in the 18th century, La forza del destino is the story of Leonora di Vargas and Alvaro, two lovers persecuted by bad fortune: at first, Alvaro accidentally kills Leonora’s father and the lovers are forced to run away, then Leonora’s brother Carlo hunts Alvaro to revenge his family and, when he finds him, challenges him to a duel. In the meanwhile, Leonora sought refuge in a monastery after a long wandering. There, she is joined by Alvaro and Carlo, who mortally wounds his sister before dying in his turn. The opera ends with Alvaro blaming his miserable fate.
