Metropolitan Opera House LeftABOUT THE OPERA

Composer & librettist: Arrigo Boito

First performance: Milan, Teatro alla Scala, 5 March 1868 (first version); Bologna, 4 October 1875 (second version)

Mefistofele is not one of those operas that were an immediate success. His composer – the poet and journalist Arrigo Boito – faced first the failure of the premiere at La Scala in 1868, then the long revision of the opera (which in the original version lasted six hours!) and finally the success of the performance at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna seven years after the first performance. Based on Goethe’s Faust, Mefistofele revolves around the love between Faust and Margherita, then between Faust and Elena, and the temptations offered by Mefistofele, who in the end is thwarted as Faust, seized the Gospel, cries out for God’s forgiveness and dies redeemed.
