Metropolitan Opera House LeftABOUT THE OPERA

Composer: Giacomo Puccini – Librettist: Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica

First performance: Roma, Teatro Costanzi, 14 January 1900

Differently from Sardou’s play, Puccini’s Tosca focuses only on the vicissitudes of the famous singer Floria Tosca, of her lover Mario Cavaradossi and of the treacherous Vitellio Scarpia, leaving aside minor characters and useless digressions. Puccini was far more interested in Tosca and Cavarodossi’s pursued love rather than in the depiction of great historical events. In this regard, Tosca is Puccini’s most essential and consistent opera, but many coups de théâtre, dramatically stressed by the music, continually hold the audience in suspense.
