Opéra BastilleABOUT THE OPERA

Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Librettist: Emanuel Schikaneder

First performance: Vienna, Theater auf der Wieden, 30 September 1791

Die Zauberflöte (“The Magic Flute”) is one of Mozart’s last masterpieces, premiered in Vienna in 1791, just few months before the composer’s untimely death. Composed to a libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder, who was also the impresario of the Theater auf der Wieden and who created the role of Papageno, Die Zauberflöte is written in Singspiel form, which includes both dialogue and singing. The opera reveals Masonic influence, reminding of the composer’s link with Masonic lodges. Symbolism is therefore one of the main elements of the story of Tamino and Pamina, the hero and heroine of the story, who crown their love after many trials of initiation and after the defeat of the evil Queen of the Night.
