Opéra BastilleABOUT THE OPERA

Composer: Giuseppe Verdi – Librettist: Arrigo Boito – First performance: Milan, Teatro alla Scala, 5 February 1887

The story of the Moor of Venice was an intriguing subject for composers. At the beginning of the 19th century, an adaptation of the Shakespearian text was set to music by Gioacchino Rossini, but it was overshadowed by the spectacular opera written by Giuseppe Verdi in 1887. The great Italian composer was at an age when audiences did not expect more samples of his creativity and definitely not an opera that could eclipse even his previous successes. And yet, the old composer (he was already in his seventies) surprised everyone with two more operas: Otello first, and Falstaff later.

Composed to a libretto by another composer, Arrigo Boito, Verdi’s Otello traces the famous vicissitudes of the Moor, Desdemona and Iago in a way that would open the way for a new compositional style, with the use of a strong unitary structure and a kind dramatic depth never reached before.
