ABOUT THE OPERA

Composer: Giuseppe Verdi – Librettist: Arrigo Boito – First performance: Milan, Teatro alla Scala, 9 February 1893

Falstaff is Verdi’s first comic opera after his early work Un giorno di regno – and his last work. Differently from the Giorno di regno, Falstaff was an unexpected success for the octogenarian composer, who already enthused the audience two years before with another gem written in his late years – Otello.

The libretto is based on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wifes of Windsor and it was written by Boito without informing the composer in advance. Falstaff is the amusing story of Alice Ford’s fine tricks to the detriment of the aged suitor Falstaff – who is also penniless and hopes to win both Alice’s heart and her husband’s money – and then of her jealous husband Ford, who in the end has to consent to the wedding of his daughter Nannetta with her suitor Fenton.
