An opera about love and friendship, Les Pêcheurs de Perles is Georges Bizet’s most popular work after Carmen. Set on the island of Ceylon in ancient time, its plot is based on improbable coincidences: two friends, Zurga and Nadir are both in love with Leïla, who they met some time before and who they swore to forget to save their friendship.

They met again after a long separation and, almost at the same time, they are introduced to the object of their affection. Leïla is in fact the priestess who, with her prayers, has to guarantee the safety of the fishermen from tempests and other dangers. In addition to this, Zurga had continued to visit Leïla despite his promise to his friend. When he and Leïla are discovered during a secret meeting, Nadir, recognizing Leïla as the woman who offered him hospitality when he was in danger some time before, helps them running away at the cost of his own life.
