Composer: Giacomo Puccini – Librettist: Guelfo Civini and Carlo Zangarini

First performance: New York, Metropolitan Opera, 10 December 1910

After attending a performance of David Belasco’s play The Girl of the Golden West in New York in 1907, Puccini decided to compose an opera based on it. Setting and characters makes Fanciulla a quite unusual opera for Puccini, but Minnie’s story, set in California around the 1850s, is as emotionally affecting as those of other – less lucky – Puccini’s heroines. This time, it is Minnie, owner of the Polka Saloon, who falls in love with Ramerrez, a bandit who disguises himself as Dick Johnson. After many ups and downs, culminated in Johnson’s wounding and a poker game for his life, Minnie and her lover will finally crown their love.
