ABOUT THE OPERA

Composer: Giuseppe Verdi
Librettist: Antonio Ghislanzoni
First performance: Cairo, Khedivial Opera House, 24 December 1871

Together with Traviata, Trovatore and Rigoletto, Aida is Giuseppe Verdi’s most popular opera. Commissioned by Khedive (viceroy) Ismail Pasha to celebrate the opening of the new opera house – and not of the Suez Canal – Aida tells the story of the love between an enslaved Ethiopian princess and Radames, the Egyptian commander. Their love is opposed both by Amneris, the Pharaoh’s daughter who is in love with Radames herself, and Amonasro, Aida’s father.

Aida is a monumental opera, exploring the dichotomy between private feelings and public life through grandiose choral scenes, longing monologues and the gloomy, oppressive suspicious of the priests.
